Building it in practice
Comedy timing is the heart of quirky music. Stop-start phrases, sudden pauses and unexpected instruments such as bassoon, tuba, kazoo or toy piano make listeners smile. Leave room for visual jokes by asking for short phrases with gaps. Avoid overloading the track with every silly sound at once; one or two characterful instruments work best. A short, quirky sting at the end of a joke often lands better than music running underneath it.
