Where it works
Puzzle games, investigations, magic tricks and exploration scenes.
Building it in practice
Mystery invites curiosity rather than fear. Unusual scales such as whole-tone or Lydian, light pizzicato strings, celesta and bass clarinet create intrigue, while gaps and tip-toeing rhythms leave questions open. Keep the dynamics low and the tempo moderate. If it turns scary, remove the low drones and add a lighter, questioning melody. Mysterious cues often work best short, as transitions between scenes, rather than as long beds.
