Where chiptune comes from
Composers worked inside tight hardware limits on systems like the NES, Game Boy and Commodore 64 in the 1980s. Demoscene musicians and later chiptune artists kept the sound alive with trackers and modified hardware.
What makes a track sound like chiptune
- Limited voices
- Fast arpeggios
- Bright, buzzy tones
- Loop-friendly endings
Typical structure
Game-style loops of 30 seconds to 2 minutes, built to repeat seamlessly, or song form for chiptune artists.
Vocals in chiptune
Chiptune is usually instrumental. For a song, ask for "bright pop vocals over chiptune" or pitched-up vocal chops to keep the playful game feel.
Prompting tips
Name the console style ("NES-style", "Game Boy", "16-bit SNES") and whether it needs to loop seamlessly for a game.
Too many layers make it sound like synth-pop. Ask for "four-channel" to keep the authentic limits.
