Where pop comes from
Pop as a chart category dates back to the 1950s, but the modern sound owes much to Swedish writer-producers such as Max Martin, whose verse, pre-chorus and chorus formula and tight song lengths have shaped radio pop since the late 1990s.
What makes a track sound like pop
- Chorus arrives early
- Clear energy steps between sections
- Bright, compressed mix
- Melodic top line even in instrumentals
Typical structure
Verse, pre-chorus, chorus, verse, pre-chorus, chorus, bridge, final chorus. Usually 2.5 to 3.5 minutes with the first chorus before the 1-minute mark.
Vocals in pop
Pop vocals are front and centre, clear and catchy, with the hook landing in the first chorus. Ask for the voice you want ("bright female lead", "airy male vocals") and keep the chorus lyric short enough to remember.
Prompting tips
Give the generator the emotion of the chorus and where it should land (for example "chorus at 0:45"). Naming the era helps: 80s synth-pop, 2010s EDM-pop or 2020s bedroom pop.
Vague prompts produce generic "corporate pop". Add one unusual instrument or production detail to give it identity.
