Where it works
Throwback videos, family films, retro games and anniversary content.
Building it in practice
Nostalgia relies on sounds tied to a time. Tape saturation, vinyl crackle, analogue synths, old drum machines and a slightly narrower mix all point backwards. Pick the era you want listeners to remember, such as 80s synths, 90s boom bap or 70s soul, and name it. Bittersweet harmony mixing major and minor chords deepens the effect.
