BPM measures tempo: 60 BPM is one beat per second, 120 BPM is two. Most popular music sits between 70 and 140 BPM.
Genres cluster around typical ranges. Hip hop often sits around 85 to 95, house around 120 to 128, drum and bass around 170 to 175. Some styles are felt at half the written tempo: trap is often written at 140 but feels like 70 because the snare lands on the third beat.
Tempo affects energy more than almost anything else. The same melody at 70 BPM can feel reflective and at 130 BPM can feel urgent.
Using it in a prompt
State an exact number ("at 92 BPM") when timing matters, for example for dance routines, workouts or editing to a beat. If you only care about feel, words such as "slow", "mid-tempo" or "driving" are enough.
