Hip hop music generator

Hip hop instrumentals cover a wide range, from sample-driven loops to synth-heavy modern production. What they share is a drum groove at the centre of the mix and space left for a voice, whether that is a rapper, a narrator or a hook.

Where hip hop comes from

Hip hop began at block parties in the Bronx in the 1970s, where DJs such as Kool Herc extended the drum breaks of funk records. Drum machines, samplers and later software studios took the sound from turntables to every genre it touches today.

What makes a track sound like hip hop

  • Kick and snare define the groove
  • A frequency gap in the midrange left for vocals
  • Clear 16-bar sections
  • Hook sections that add a layer or two

Typical structure

Intro (4 to 8 bars), verse (16 bars), hook (8 bars), repeated two or three times with a bridge or beat switch near the end.

Vocals in hip hop

Hip hop vocals range from fast, technical rap to melodic sung hooks. Say which you want, and for the hook ask for a short, repeatable line. Mark verses and hooks with [Verse] and [Chorus] in Custom mode.

Prompting tips

Tell the generator whether a vocal will sit on top and how long verses should be. Naming a region or era (West Coast, Atlanta, 2000s) is more useful than "modern".

"Hip hop" alone is broad. Without an era or sub-style you will get a middle-of-the-road beat; pick a lane first.
