Where funk comes from
James Brown and his band reshaped soul into funk in the mid-1960s by emphasising the downbeat and turning every instrument into a rhythm part. Sly and the Family Stone, Parliament-Funkadelic and the Meters extended it through the 1970s.
What makes a track sound like funk
- Emphasis on the downbeat
- 16th-note guitar scratching
- Basslines that dance around the kick
- Short, punchy horn hits
Typical structure
A long vamp with breakdowns where instruments drop out and re-enter, then a bridge or horn section to change the energy.
Vocals in funk
Funk vocals are rhythmic: short shouted phrases, chants and call-and-response that lock into the groove. Ask for "chanted group vocals on the hook" rather than long melodic lines.
Prompting tips
Mention the bass playing style (slap or fingerstyle) and "16th-note guitar". "Breakdown with just bass and drums" is a useful structural cue.
Too many chords make funk sound like jazz fusion. Ask for a one-chord vamp if you want the classic sound.
