Where chillhop comes from
The name became widely used in the mid-2010s as labels and playlist curators separated the cleaner, more musical side of instrumental hip hop from the deliberately degraded lo-fi sound.
What makes a track sound like chillhop
- A bassline that carries a melody of its own
- Clean top end compared with lo-fi
- Ghost notes on the snare for a played feel
- Occasional solo instrument trading phrases with the keys
Typical structure
Intro, two main sections that alternate (A and B), a short breakdown, then a final A. Usually 2 to 3 minutes.
Vocals in chillhop
Chillhop sometimes carries a relaxed sung hook or a laid-back rap verse over the groove. Ask for "soft, close-miked vocals" and keep the lyrics simple and conversational so the band still leads.
Prompting tips
Ask for a "melodic bassline" and name a lead instrument such as flute or muted trumpet. Words like "sunny" or "afternoon" steer the mix brighter than lo-fi.
If you add crackle and tape effects the result drifts back to lo-fi. Leave them out unless you want that blend.
