Phonk music generator

Phonk takes the eerie, lo-fi sound of 1990s Memphis rap tapes and pushes it through distortion. Modern "drift phonk" is the version most people hear on car and gym edits: a fast cowbell melody, a clipped 808 and chopped vocal samples.

Where phonk comes from

The name came from SoundCloud producers in the 2010s who sampled Memphis rap artists such as Three 6 Mafia and DJ Screw-era chopped-and-screwed tapes. Drift phonk, which grew around car culture videos around 2020, made it a global short-video sound.

What makes a track sound like phonk

  • Saturation and clipping used as a sound
  • Cowbell as the lead instrument
  • Pitched-down vocal samples
  • Hard drops made for edits

Typical structure

Short and loop-based: 8-bar intro, a drop with the cowbell melody, a breakdown, then a second drop. Commonly 1.5 to 2.5 minutes.

Vocals in phonk

Phonk usually uses chopped, pitched-down vocal samples rather than full verses. Ask for "original pitched-down vocal chants" to keep the character without sampling real recordings.

Prompting tips

Say "drift phonk" for the gym and car-edit version, or "Memphis phonk" for slower, darker, tape-style tracks.

Phonk is known for sampled vocals. Ask for "original vocal chops" or "no vocals" to keep the result clear of recognisable samples.

Prompts to start from
