Where indie folk comes from
The modern indie folk sound grew in the 2000s with artists such as Bon Iver, Fleet Foxes and Iron & Wine, drawing on 1960s folk revival songwriting and lo-fi home recording.
What makes a track sound like indie folk
- Organic, room-recorded sound
- Fingerpicked patterns
- Group harmonies and stomps
- Slow emotional build
Typical structure
Verse and chorus with a slow build; many songs start sparse and end with a fuller, communal chorus.
Vocals in indie folk
Indie folk favours warm, intimate voices and close harmonies, often a duet or a group chorus. Ask for "soft male and female harmony vocals" and let the last chorus become a singalong.
Prompting tips
Describe the room ("recorded in a wooden cabin") and the build ("starts with solo guitar, ends with stomps and strings").
A loud drum kit pushes it toward pop rock. Ask for "stomps and claps instead of drums".
