Performing rights organisation (PRO)

A PRO collects royalties for songwriters and publishers when music is performed publicly or broadcast.

Examples include ASCAP and BMI in the United States, PRS in the UK and GEMA in Germany. Venues, broadcasters and streaming services pay them for the right to play music, and they distribute money to registered writers.

If you play music publicly in a shop, gym or restaurant, local rules may require a licence from a PRO even for some royalty-free music. Requirements differ by country.

Using it in a prompt

Not a prompt term. Check your local PRO’s rules if you play music in a public venue.
