Half-time

Half-time is a feel where the backbeat lands half as often, making a tempo feel twice as slow.

In a normal 4/4 groove the snare hits on beats 2 and 4. In half-time it hits only on beat 3, so a 140 BPM track feels like 70. Trap, dubstep and many cinematic drum patterns use half-time to feel heavy and spacious while hi-hats keep fast energy on top.

Double-time is the opposite: the backbeat speeds up, often used to raise excitement in a final section.

Using it in a prompt

Write both tempo and feel: "140 BPM half-time" gives a heavier result than "70 BPM".
